I want to extend a huge congratulations to the Blue Mountains Concert Band who entered the 2026 NSW State Band Championships for the first time this year and, under the guidance of their fantastic conductor Rob Mattessi, were named Champion Concert Band in their division. Congratulations!  

The band showed strengths in being able to perform emotionally, choosing solemn and slow pieces for their repertoire. I commend the ensemble on their commitment to Australian music, demonstrated through their decision to honour Australian composer Benjamin Lau through the selection of the piece ‘Gulin’s Majesty’ for one of their performances. Overall, their winning outcome is a great display of many weeks of preparation and their dedication to music.  
 
I also acknowledge Band Manager Helen Clarke for her exceptional energy, commitment and skill in promoting and supporting this group of musicians from across the Mountains! 

I have had a very long association with the Blue Mountains Concert and Youth Band and wish them every success in preparing for the upcoming concert in June next year.
