On this day 10 years ago, fires ripped through the Blue Mountains. In the villages of Springwood, Winmalee, Yellow Rock and Mount Victoria over 200 homes and many much-loved pets were lost. This demolition obviously caused a huge rift in our community. Many people are still feeling that pain to this day. I take this opportunity to pay my respect to all the exceptional RFS firefighters and Fire and Rescue and national parks crews who swept into action that day. I acknowledge the police, the paramedics, the SES volunteers—all the first responders—the councils, and particularly the schools, which had to care for students because it happened during school hours. They all protected our community as best they could that day. I also thank the many non-government organisations that swept in to help.
