It is with great sadness that I acknowledge the passing of former Blue Mountains resident and stalwart advocate for Motor Neurone Disease (MND), Bob Montgomery. Bob completed five charity bike rides for MND awareness, raising the incredible sum of more than $300,000. Bob, at 82 years young, completed his final ride this week - a mammoth 6 week 5,300km charity bike ride across Australia, riding alongside his grandson Tom. Bob famously said that he rode to "generate awareness of MND and raise a few a "bob" along the way". I recall joining MND representatives, local Rotary clubs and the broader Blue Mountains community to welcome Bob and Peter Shehadie (his support person) back home - after they cycled from Perth to Leura raising money for MND in 2015. The event was electric! He was much-loved and widely respected. Bob was a legend: determined and generous. He was a true gentleman, an absolute inspiration and a community treasure. He will be dearly missed. My condolences go to his wife Jenny, his loving family and many friends. Rest up now, lovely soul.
