Blue Mountains, Nepean and Western Sydney* ambulance zones have welcomed a total of fifteen new paramedic interns in the last month, after they were officially inducted into the service at ceremonies in Sydney. 

 

On July 11 three new paramedic interns were welcomed into the NSW Ambulance Nepean Blue Mountains zone. It followed inductions on June 27 of 12 paramedics covering Nepean Blue Mountains and the Western Sydney zones. In total in 2024 – 30 interns have been assigned to the Nepean Blue Mountains zone and 33 to the Western Sydney zone. 

 

The graduations at the State Operations Centre in Sydney OIympic Park further boost frontline health services across the state, with 590 new paramedic interns entering the service since the beginning of the year. 

 

As of July 12, 2025, NSW Ambulance has conducted five induction ceremonies, another three induction ceremonies are scheduled for the remainder of the year. 

 

Blue Mountains MP Trish Doyle said she was pleased to see the new interns in the Nepean Blue Mountains ambulance zone, joining the officers already in service here “whose core values of compassion and service are central to NSW Ambulance”. 

 

“It’s great to have more boots on the ground,” Ms Doyle said.  

 

“This strengthens our frontline health services and makes a real difference in people’s lives in our region.” 

 

One of the three new interns, Carissa Johnson, said:  

“To be a paramedic and continue a family legacy is the culmination of a long-held ambition. The training has been intense but fun, and I am looking forward to putting my skills into practice”. 

 

On April 1, 2023, the station profile for Nepean Blue Mountains Zone was 229 full time equivalent staff. As of July 1,2025 the station profile for Nepean Blue Mountains Zone was 260 FTE – a base 31 extra FTE paramedics in the NBM Zone (regardless of interns). 

 

Health Minister Ryan Park welcomed the newest recruits who will “further enhance the capacity of the service to deliver timely, professional and patient-centred care”. 

NSW Ambulance Chief Executive Dr Dominic Morgan said: “The integration of new practitioners strengthens our foundations, ensuring delivery of consistent and high-quality care into the future.” 

 

The paramedic interns will be posted across NSW to complete the on-road portion of their 12-month internships, before taking permanent positions in metropolitan and regional areas wherever vacancies occur. 

 

It comes as 24 NSW public hospitals have either achieved or are in the process of implementing safe staffing ratios in their emergency departments.  

 

Nepean Hospital has already completed the rollout of safe staffing ratios as has Liverpool, John Hunter, Royal North Shore, Royal Prince Alfred, Tamworth, Tweed and Westmead Children’s Hospital.
