Safety upgrades at three known crash spots on the Great Western Highway will mean safer road trips for all road users through the Blue Mountains.
The NSW Labor Government-funded safety upgrades include the installation of additional signage, reflective line marking and improved sight lines for motorists on highway intersections at Lawson, Wentworth Falls and Katoomba.
The upgrades were completed in response to community concerns over each intersection, which included a number of accidents at the intersection of Somers Street and the highway at Lawson.
“A safety review of the Great Western Highway and Somers Street intersection has since identified that there was limited warning and visibility of the traffic signals for drivers, increasing the risk of a crash,” Ms Doyle said.
At this Lawson intersection, additional traffic signals have been installed in both directions so that motorists can see the traffic lights on approach earlier.
“By improving sight distances and removing vegetation in that area we have given drivers more time to see the traffic signals and respond accordingly,” Ms Doyle said.
Other safety improvements in the Blue Mountains include:
- Wentworth Falls: At the intersection with Adele Avenue and Falls Road, Transport for NSW has installed additional line-marking and reflective markers to better guide drivers through the curve in the road.
- Katoomba: At the intersection with Civic Place and Goldsmith Place, improved wayfinding signs and additional line-marking to help drivers select the correct lane to access Katoomba has been installed.
